Work under way to repair N&W No. 611 for trip to Strasburg
The Virginia Museum of Transportation reported late last week that work was under way to identify and repair the problem with the stoker of N&W No. 611, an issue which has delayed the Class J’s planned trip to the Strasburg Rail Road. To diagnose the issue, the museum said in an online update, the tender and locomotive were separated, and the 35 tons of coal in the tender had to be removed. A break in the stoker screw, likely because of a weak spot in the original casting, was then confirmed. Repairs are now under way, after which the engine and tender will be reloaded and the 611 will again be repaired for departure. The train’s travel schedule will not be announced for security reasons.
Norfolk Southern announces $5 million charity plan for Hampton Roads area
Norfolk Southern has announced plans to donate $5 million to nonprofit organizations in Virginia’s Hampton Roads region, distributing $1 million a year for each of the next five years. WAVY-TV reports a committee of NS employees and retirees will review grant proposals submitted by local organizations, with priority to programs that support education, the environment, social equity, and community advancement. The effort comes as NS moves its headquarters from Norfolk to Atlanta. “ “The Hampton Roads community has helped to shape Norfolk Southern and will remain part of who we are,” said NS CEO Jim Squires. “Even as we relocate our headquarters, we will continue to actively support the prosperity of the Hampton Roads community to express our ongoing gratitude and commitment.”
Amtrak names Mason to oversee Major Program Delivery
Amtrak has named Laura Mason as executive vice president of Major Program Delivery, a new organization within the company to oversee its largest infrastructure, equipment, and station programs. She will join the company in June 28 from Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (DC Metro), where she has spent the last five years in various management positions, including executive vice president of Capital Delivery, where she oversaw the transit agency’s capital program. Amtrak President Stephen Gardner said in a press release, “With well over $40 billion of critical infrastructure, station and fleet investments in the planning and development phase, Laura will bring focused executive experience and leadership to the task of turning our ambitious plans into reality.”
It’s good to see Amtrak finally hiring someone with (sort of) railroad experience.
Even if that experience is from a failing agency!
611 is currently ferrying north on her way to Strasburg.
611 was fully assembled and under steam at NC Transportation Museum on this past Saturday. Don’t know if stoker was working or not as it was standing in place while I was there.
