PORT HURON, Mich. — The former treasurer of the Port Huron & Detroit Railroad Historical Society has been sentenced to 93 days in jail for theft of funds from the organization, the Port Huron Times Herald reports.
Steve Harvey of Mount Vernon, Ohio, pleaded guilty to larceny less than $200, reduced from embezzlement between $1,000 and $20,000, and also paid $10,014.75 in restitution, his attorney told the newspaper.
Harvey said during his plea hearing that he made purchases with society funds without approval from the organization’s board and for his personal use.
This happens ! I know of at least two cases from the distant past in which someone very active in a railfan organization was stealing funds. In one case, the amount was about $63,000 and in the other case, $9,000.
