Norfolk Southern logoNORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Southern has issued customer advisories informing shippers of delays because of two derailments on its system.

On Wednesday, the railroad reported a derailment near Meridian, Miss., would lead to delays of at least 24 hours on several routes, including its Meridian Speedway interchange with Kansas City Southern, Union Pacific interchange traffic, and traffic to and from Birmingham. WTOK-TV reports that derailment occurred about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and involved 15 to 18 cars near Russell, Miss., about 7 miles east-northeast of Meridian. Video footage shows a number of containers and trailers stacked up on the single-track main. The TV station reports that some hazardous materials were being carried but none were spilled.

Today, the rairlroad reported a washout caused by flash flooding led to a derailment at Canisteo, N.Y., 115 miles west of Binghamton, blocking the single-track Southern Tier main line. No additional details on the derailment have been reported, but the railroad says customers should expect delays of at least 24 hours for shipments using that route.

  1. Well darn! I was supposed to catch the Crescent #20 tonight to make a connection with the Cardinal in Charlottesville tomorrow. From Amtrak.com it looks as if #20 has not left NOL yet and may in fact be cancelled. No actual word from Amtrak yet, I but may plan on driving to Charlottesville in the morning.
