On a still winter night, G-D Line no. 4 eases a train of holiday merry-makers to the interchange at Mina, where they will transfer to the Devil’s Gulch & Helengon for the rest of their journey to the New Year’s celebration at Helengon. Ron Foreman of Glendale, Calif., lit this scene on his HO scale layout with a single flashlight to give the moonlight effect. The snow is Woodland Scenics Soft Flake Snow, shaken on temporarily, then vacuumed up after the photo was shot.
Pennsylvania RR no. 9505 leads a trio of F units as they pass by Jefferson Station trailing a coal train. The action takes place on Lee Gasparik’s O scale PRR and New York Central layout, which was featured in Great Model Railroads 2020. The locomotives are brass Overland Models imports that have been converted to run on onboard battery power and radio control. Paul Kahne shot the photo.
The engine crew takes a break while the folks at the yard office get together the supplies needed to keep the railroad running. Joe Kurilec of Berea, Ohio, used a pair of O scale figures to experiment with forced perspective on his HO scale Erie Plate Railroad layout. The waiting 0-8-0 locomotive is a WalthersProto model and the yard office was kitbashed from an old Athearn caboose body. Joe also shot the photo.
Gordy Gunderson unloads a consignment at the team track in Uff Da in the Indiana dunes. Bruce Dombey of Portage, Ind., scratch-built the On30 freight car and customized the die-cast metal vehicles by disassembling, painting, and detailing them. The Ford Model A pickup is an Athearn model and the figures are from Arttista. Bruce scratch-built the structures and also took the photo.
A Georgia & Florida Electro-Motive Division F unit and GP-7 share motive power duties on a southbound freight containing paper products and pulpwood heading for Vidalia, Ga. Ashby Trevey of Jacksonville, Fla., photographed the scene on his HO scale G&F RR, which is set in the late 1960s. The locomotives are custom-decorated Athearn Genesis models.
Having finished chopping the firewood, a worker feeds the former locomotive boiler that provides the steam to power the head house that keeps this backwoods mine going. R.S. Weinstein of Little Rock, Ark., built the HO scale diorama using Sierra West structures, Fun & Games figures, and Microlumina light-emitting-diode lighting. He also shot the photo.
