Toronto GO Transit logoPICKERING, Ontario — GO Transit service on a portion of the commuter operator’s Lakeshore East line will be altered for several days following the death of a worker on a maintenance-of-way project Saturday night.

The Canadian Press reports a 41-year-old man was killed when a ballast car tipped over, pinning him underneath. The accident happened about 7:30 p.m. on the Lakeshore East line, which was closed for the weekend for bridge repair work, near the Rouge Hill station. GO Transit’s parent agency, Metrolinx, said the individual killed was a contract worker. The agency said there would be a full investigation.

“This is devastating news. Our first priority is of course the safety of everyone that works on the railroad,” a Metrolinx spokesman said.

City News reports Metrolinx announced Sunday that trains will not run through the accident site for several days as the investigation continues. In the interim, service will operate on half-hour intervals, and will be subject to delays of up to 30 minutes as a bus bridge operates between Guildwood, one stop west of Rouge Hill, and Pickering, one stop to the east.
