JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — CSX Executive Vice President Mark Wallace, who joined the railroad during Hunter Harrison’s tenure as CEO after serving as Harrison’s chief of staff at both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific, has died, the railroad has announced.
Wallace, 50, died Sunday after a battle with cancer.
“The entire CSX organization is mourning Mark’s loss, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family,” CEO Jim Foote said in a press release. “Throughout his illness, Mark maintained his characteristic passion for life, good humor and concern for the loved ones he leaves behind.”
Wallace joined CSX as executive vice president of corporate affairs and chief of staff in spring 2017. The railroad credits him with applying his experience and knowledge to address the challenges of the railroad’s move to a Precision Scheduled Railroading operating model, while helping lay the foundation to capitalize on new opportunities resulting from the changes.
He was named executive vice president of sales and marketing in July 2018, and moved into an advisory role in June of this year as he underwent cancer treatment.
“Mark’s acumen, energy and integrity helped drive the company’s overall transformation and more recently played a pivotal role in the ongoing cultural transformation of CSX,” Foote said. “He helped set our course toward achieving a revolutionary vision for the company.”
