Just like the original section of our project railroad, our preferred method of transferring a track plan to a flat tabletop uses a computer to download and print out the full-scale template of the Readers’ Choice Railroad so we can easily tell how track, accessories, and some scenery elements work on our 3 x 8-foot extension.

  1. After printing out the full-size template on my computer printer, I use cellophane tape to fix the pages to the foam insulation board installed over the layout framework. First, I use a pizza cutter to trace the lines of the template and carve an indentation into the foam. After removing the template, I highlight the track routes (indentations) using black and red markers.
For complete instructions on how to transfer the full-size template to a flat tabletop, see the March 2011 issue of Classic Toy Trains magazine.
