SYCAMORE, Ga. — Some 14 cars of a Norfolk Southern intermodal train derailed Friday near Sycamore, closing an adjacent highway. No injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were involved.

Turner County Fire/Emergency Management Agency reported U.S. 41 had been blocked by the derailment, which occurred about 7:30 a.m. Friday. Part of the route was reopened in about 24 hours, but Sycamore Mayor Wayne Woodroff reported portions of the road could remain closed for up to a week.

Sycamore, with a population of about 700, is approximately 75 miles south of Macon.

  1. From that shot I don’t see why US 41 was closed, if anything the only road blocked was the frontage road on the other side. Only reason to close 41 was for the emergency vehicles and any vehicles needed to…I see no reason what so ever. Work it from the other side as they are with the side boom dozers, except for the 1 car that is in the ditch next 41.
