Greenbrier Companies logoLAKE OSWEGO, Ore. – The adoption of precision scheduled railroading may be causing railroads to downsize their locomotive and car fleets, but freight carbuilder Greenbrier Cos. still received new orders of 6,200 units valued at $670 million for the first fiscal quarter of 2022.

Car orders include intermodal, boxcars, gondolas, tank cars, covered hoppers, and automobile carriers. In addition to new orders, Greenbrier received orders to rebody 1,400 cars as part of its railcar conversion program. This follows orders for 1,300 car conversions in fiscal 2021.

William A. Furman, Chairman and CEO says Greenbrier has received orders already equal to 36% of the total orders received in fiscal 2021. The new orders are in addition to a $2.8 billion new car backlog as of Aug. 31, 2021.
