TRENTON, N.J. — The NJ Transit board of directors has approved a settlement for a crew member injured in the 2016 accident that saw a train crash through the end of track at its Hoboken, N.J., terminal.
NorthJersey.com reports that the board unanimously approved the settlement for Mark Mari, a conductor on the train in the Sept. 29, 2016, crash that killed one person and injured more than 100 others.
The amount of the settlement was not disclosed. The agency settled with some accident victims or their families last year [see “Digest: NJ Transit settles lawsuits …,” Trains News Wire, May 14, 2021]; NorthJersey.com reports those settlements totaled $8.15 million.
Mari suffered injuries to his shoulder, hip, knee, and back, as well as severe emotional trauma, according to court documents, and was unable to return to work as a conductor.
The accident was attributed to the engineer’s sleep apnea and a lack of positive train control.
