WASHINGTON — Amtrak service remains disrupted today (Sunday, March 6) on the Northeast Corridor as cleanup continues from the Saturday morning derailment of a Norfolk Southern coal train at Perryman, Md.
As was the case Saturday, the passenger railroad is offering limited Acela service between New York and Washington, D.C., and limited Northeast Regional service between New York, Washington, and points south.
According to a notification on the Amtrak website, these other changes are planned:
— Both directions of the Palmetto, trains 89 and 90 between New York and Savannah, Ga., are cancelled.
— Both directions of the Carolinian, trains 79 and 80, will operate only between Raleigh and Charlotte, N.C.
— The southbound Silver Star (train 91) will operate between Washington and Miami; the northbound Silver Star (train 92) will operate only between Miami and Jacksonville, Fla.
— The southbound Crescent (train 19) will operate between Washington and New Orleans; the northbound Crescent (train 20) will operate on its normal New Orleans-New York schedule.
— The westbound Cardinal (train 51) will operate only between Indianapolis and Chicago.
Watch the Amtrak website and Amtrak Alerts Twitter accounts for the Northeast Corridor and national system for further updates.
Twenty cars of a coal train derailed Saturday morning, leading to the current disruptions [see “Norfolk Southern derailment disrupts Amtrak service …,” Trains News Wire, March 5, 2022].
There seems to be almost no logic to these modified end points or cancelations.
