CALGARY — The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will release its investigation report Thursday on the February 2019 derailment of a runaway Canadian Pacific train near Field, British Columbia, that killed three crew members.
The agency is set to release the report and hold a press conference on its findings in Calgary. The press conference will be carried live on the TSB YouTube Channel.
Preliminary investigation by the TSB found the previous crew had struggled to maintain control of the grain train prior to the Feb. 4, 2019, derailment that killed crew members Andrew Dockrell, Dylan Paradis, and Daniel Waldenberger-Bulmer [see “Canadian investigators: Prior crew struggled …,” Trains News Wire, April 19, 2019].
Family members of those killed subsequently sued CP, claiming the railroad had emphasized cost-cutting over safety — a charge the railroad strongly disputed [see “Digest: Families sue Canadian Pacific …,” News Wire, April 19, 2021]. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police opened a criminal investigation into the derailment in late 2020, after a former railroad police officer claimed he was prevented from looking into some aspects of the accident [see “Digest: RCMP opens investigation …,” News Wire, Dec. 17, 2020].
