Logo of the International Brotherhood of Electrical WorkersTORONTO — Signal and communications workers at Toronto Union Station have gone on strike, creating the possibility of service disruptions at the station which sees more then 300 trains daily.

The CBC reports 95 members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers walked out at 12:01 a.m. today (Wednesday, April 20) after the union failed to reach agreement with Toronto Terminal Railway. The workers handle signal and communication maintenance and train control in the station’s rail corridor.

Provincial transit agency Metrolinx says it has a contingency plan in place to deal with the strike and hopes impact to GO Transit and Union Pearson Express service will be limited.

The workers have been without a contract since December 2019; a tentative agreement reached in September 2021 was not ratified by union members. The railroad says wages are the primary matter in dispute.
