LONG BEACH, Calif. — Officials of the Port and City of Long Beach held a golden spike ceremony Thursday to mark the completion of a project to increase intermodal moves by rail from the port.
The $34.7 million Pier G/J Double Track Access Project adds 8,000 feet of second-main trackage, allowing four terminals in the port’s south basin to handle inbound and outbound trains simultaneously. It will increase rail efficiency at the two piers by 25%, port officials said.
“This project will streamline operations and reduce truck trips at a time we are experiencing an unprecedented growth in cargo,” Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero said in a press release. “Our investments in on-dock rail will help the port remain globally competitive and environmentally sustainable well into the future.”
The project, which began in February 2020, was funded in part by a $14 million state grant, with the rest of the money coming from the port. Its completion comes shortly after the port received U.S. Maritime Administration approval for another major rail project, the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility [see “Rail project at Port of Long Beach gets federal approval,” Trains News Wire, April 19, 2022].
