UP derailment shuts down main line in Nebraska

Union Pacific logo with Building America sloganSHELTON, Neb. — Fifteen cars of a Union Pacific train derailed Friday evening near Shelton, Neb., temporarily closing the railroad’s main line on the Kearney Subdivision.

The Grand Island Independent reports the derailment occurred about 5:45 p.m. about a mile west of Shelton along U.S. Route 30. No injuries were reported, and no hazardous materials were said to be involved. A photograph shows intermodal double-stack cars were involved.

The cause is under investigation.

The derailment site is about 20 miles east of Kearney, Neb.

  1. It’s two tracks in that area. The third track begins at Gibbon, the next town west, where the Marysville Sub comes in from the southeast. It’s suspected it was weather-related as a severe thunderstorm was moving through the area at the time.
