WASHINGTON — With weekly traffic figures remaining depressed, year-to-date carload traffic for U.S. railroad has slipped below 2021 figures, albeit just slightly, according to the latest figures from the Association of American Railroads.
Carload volume for the first 25 weeks of 2022 is down 0.1% from the same period a year ago, after being higher than the 2021 figure for most of the year. That figure reflects the week ending June 25, in which there were 229,857 carloads, down 3.1% from the corresponding week in 2021.
Intermodal traffic was down 5.5% at 263,517 containers and trailers, while overall traffic was 493,374 carloads and intermodal units, a 4.4% decline from the same week in 2021.
Year-to-date intermodal traffic is down 6.3%, while overall traffic is down 3.5%.
North American figures for the week, for the 12 reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, include 324,963 carloads, down 3.8% from the corresponding week in 2021; 348,426 intermodal units, down 5.4%, and total volume of 673,389 carloads and intermodal units, down 4.6%. North American volume for the first 25 weeks of the year is down 3.7% compared with 2021.
