WASHINGTON – The Surface Transportation Board in September will hold a three-day public hearing on the proposed Canadian Pacific-Kansas City Southern merger.

The hearing, set for Sept. 28, 29, and 30 at the board headquarters, will be livestreamed online, the board announced in a decision released on Friday. Speakers wishing to participate in the hearing must notify the board by Sept. 14.

The board also pushed back the deadline for final briefs to be submitted. The deadline is now Oct. 14 rather than Sept. 20, and will close the record on the merger.

Under federal statute, the board must issue a decision on the merger within 90 days after the close of the record unless an environmental analysis has not been completed. The timeline means the board is expected to issue a decision on the merger by mid January. If approved, the decision would become effective 30 days later.

  1. The Super Bowl of railroading is about to begin, order your pizzas, get your popcorn, stock up on the beer because Marty Oberman is about to bring the room to order.

    1. That’s for sure, Mr. Rice. CSX+PAR was minor league compared to this. The last “Super Bowl of railroading” was the Conrail carve up and that was for sure a doozy. We’ll see how this one stacks up.
I for one wouldn’t mind a bit if CN got the KCS line KC-Springfield with CPKC retaining Roodhouse-St. Louis and trackage rights KC-Roodhouse. Then with CN gaining a KC-eastern Canada route that bypasses the Chicago congestion via the IC-EJ&E connection at Matteson and EJ&E-GTW connection at Griffith, hopefully CN will restore all the mainline track capacity Gilman-Matteson ripped out by Edward Moyers and Hunter Harrison in the mid-80s. That, hopefully, will go a long way to keeping the Amtrak IL-supported trains and CONO on time. And in the name of everything that’s holy, please Marty Oberman force CP to convey train dispatching authority of the Elgin, C&M to Rondout, and Fox Lake Subs to where it belongs, to the Metra CCF in Chicago!

    2. And one more thing, Mr. Oberman, in exchange for conveying train dispatching on the C&M to Metra, bless the capacity expansion projects between Northbrook and Glenview that disgracefully Glenview was able to get stopped some 2-5 years ago. Then maybe Metra delays due to CP freights accessing the UP Milwaukee Sub can be eliminated. Perhaps accomplishing those projects will re-open the way for Amtrak to add those 3 CHI-MKE round trips which is what touched off “The Battle of Glenview” in the first place.

  2. Just let the Merger take Place it’s Funny the UP CN NS are saying it’s going to put Competition on them Just sit back and Relax It will Benefit the Global Supply Chain
