ATLANTA — Norfolk Southern has launched a new program offering $1.2 million in scholarships to children of front-line employees — such as train crew members and mechanics.
Under the Thoroughbred Scholars program, 100 students will receive scholarships of up to $10,000 over four years, while three students will receive special awards of up to $40,000 over four years.
“We created the Thoroughbred Scholars program as another way to support our colleagues and their families,” NS CEO Alan Shaw said in a press release. “We are putting our values into action with a program that recognizes the importance of a strong education and skill development. We’re proud of these outstanding students and look forward to the great things they will achieve in their academic pursuits.”
The three special scholarships of $10,000, renewable for four years. include:
— The HBCU Scholar, for a student attending a Historically Black College or University. The first winner, Ari Sneed of Snellville, Ga., is majoring in computer science at Tuskegee University.
— The STEM Scholar, for a student pursuing a degree in a nonmedical science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. The first recipient, Brody Greene of Beaver, Pa., plans to major in energy systems engineering at the University of Wyoming.
— The Community Scholar, for a student distinguished by his or her community leadership and volunteer work. Mattie Vaughn of Gardendale, Ala., the first recipient, plans to major in human development and family sciences at Auburn University.
More than 500 students applied for the program this year.
