GREENVILLE, S.C. — No injuries were reported and no hazardous-material situation resulted when a Norfolk Southern train derailed Thursday morning in Greenville’s Poe Mill Community.

WSPA-TV reports the derailment occurred about 8 a.m. The presence of three tank cars among those that had derailed led first responders to initially treat the incident as a potential hazmat situation, but once that was ruled out, authorities turned the scene over to Norfolk Southern for repair and recovery. At least nine cars were involved.

Two nearby roads, Buncombe Road and Swamp Rabbit Trail, remain closed during the cleanup, which officials from Greenville County Emergency Management said could take several days.

  1. Swamp Rabbit trail runs right by Republic Locomotive Works and there is usually something interesting to see outside the buildings.
