ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Rides on Virginia Railway Express (VRE) trains will be free systemwide for the entire month of September, beginning tomorrow, September 1, the commuter railroad has announced.

Passengers will not need tickets to ride between any of VRE’s 19 stations. In a statement, the railroad says suspension of fares is designed to “thank loyal passengers, welcome new riders, and help mitigate the effects of the closure of Metrorail’s Blue and Yellow line stations south of Reagan National Airport, slated to begin September 10.”

Free parking is available at all VRE stations except Alexandria, Crystal City, L’Enfant, and Union Station. Washington’s Metro transit system is offering free parking at the Franconia-Springfield garage for the duration of that station’s closure. VRE has bicycle parking at all stations and welcomes full-size bicycles on all trains.

The nation’s 13th largest commuter rail service, VRE connects central and northern Virginia with the District of Columbia.
