The derailment occurred about 3:30 a.m., leading to a coal spill, but involved no hazardous materials. No injuries were reported. The Jonesboro Police Department reported on its Facebook page that the derailment led to the closure of Gee and Culberhouse streets, which cross the railroad tracks in the area of the derailment, and was likely to cause major delays.

A Union Pacific representative told the newspaper the cause of the derailment was under investigation.
