NEWARK, N.J. — NJ Transit announced Wednesday it had signed a three-year naming-rights agreement with Jersey City-based online wagering site BetMGM to rename the transit agency’s rail line to the station serving MetLife Stadium, home of the area’s two NFL teams, as the “BetMGM Meadowlands Rail Line.”

NJ Transit did not announce the value of the agreement in its press release, but NJ.com reports the deal is worth $3 million. The agreement also includes extensive print and digital advertising throughout the NJ Transit system.

The line in question, between the Secaucus Junction and Meadowlands stations, only operates for select events at MetLife Stadium.

“This unique advertising partnership represents a significant new source of revenue for NJ Transit,” agency CEO Kevin S. Corbett said in the press release. “This new and innovative partnership is part of our continued commitment to leverage NJ Transit assets to maximize non-farebox revenue and help keep fares stable for our customers.”

The new branding will appear on NJ transit system maps, station signage, and elsewhere.

  1. SEPTA has been wrapping Silverliner V MU cars and Bomber Push-Pull cars with ads. This includes the windows.

They also sold naming rights to Pattison Subway Station with no provision for telling passengers where the station is.

    1. Ouch. At least with “Wawa Station”–which Wawa has naming rights to–you know you’re going to Wawa HQ. And I guess anywhere else nearby.

    2. but there was always a WAWA station when it was the PRR’s Media West-Chester branch from it’s inception.

  2. Amen Charles, never buy anything heavily advertised on TV or by posted ADS. I like you hardly notice all the poster ads.

    1. They do get out of hand in some cases, but I remember getting busted years ago by my sister while harping on naming rights. My argument fell apart when I said “Whatever happened to all the classic names like Wrigley Field.”

    2. The names Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, and Wrigley Field (baseball) and Lambeau Field (Football) aren’t for sale. However, the classic name of Comiskey Park 2.0 was sold out. Milwaukee’s Miller Park (baseball) was well on its way to being a classic name but was sold off to a higher bidder, enraging the fans.

Naming rights are ridiculous. Some ad agency convinces the corporation that selling naming rights will be to the company’s advantage. The only ones to profit are the ad agencies. Perhaps also the corporation’s marketing department has its hands out for a kickback.

Chicago Union Station is plastered each year, floor and walls and everywhere else, by a different company’s ads. By the time I got on the train last Tuesday, I’d already forgotten what was being advertised. If I did remember, my likelihood of buying the product would not have shifted a micro meter. At earlier times in my life frequently rode buses and subways in New York covered with advertisements. Never once bought a product as a result.
