SANDUSKY, Ohio — Cleanup continues but Norfolk Southern’s main line has been reopened though Sandusky following a derailment that led to reroutes and cancellations for Amtrak service.

The Sandusky Register reports that the Columbus Avenue underpass, where derailed tank cars of paraffin wax fell to the railway below, remained closed as of Monday, Oct. 10, following the Saturday derailment, which disrupted Amtrak’s Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited [see “NS derailment blocks line …,” Trains News Wire, Oct. 8, 2022].

Normal Amtrak service has since been restored.

The roadway will remain closed until further notice, city manager Eric Wobser told the newspaper, with the city still needing to assess whether road repairs will be needed after the derailment is cleaned up.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
