This grade-crossing scene is a perfect example of effectively combined basic scenery elements.

We concluded the project by adding small details that give the 4 x 8-foot layout the Appalachian-theme
requested by you.

But because we weren’t quite ready to stop building, we made plans to add an extension to the layout. Catch a glimpse of the extension (bonus coverage in September 2011 CTT) and toy trains rolling along the Readers’ Choice RR in this action-packed video we prepared just for you!

  1. You did a great job cramming a lot of detail into the layout. I have been working on a layout for 25 years, and your project encouraged me to finish my project.

  2. This is my first time seeing this layout in action, and I must say it brings a whole new perspective to what can be accomplished in a small space. Nice Job Kent and the rest of the staff @ ctt !

  3. This is real toy train at a very good level. A few more automatic accessories would be nice. Great article on building Readers Choice Railroad.

  4. I can't wait for the September issue, so that I can read about the SuperStreet addition. My son wants me to use SuperStreets on my layout (now entering its fifth year of the planning stage), but I wasn't sure how to incorporate it. This plan fits the bill perfectly. Thanks a tonne!

  5. Finally, a layout plan that I would conceiveably want to build. The finished layout, with the extention included, looks great….. A job WELL done!
However, with that being sais, the biggest drawback on this layout plan is the lack of a siding or runaround track, which would make switching the mine spur easier. A turntable option would be nice also.
Were I to build this layout, which I am strongly considering at the moment, I would lose the gawdy-looking turbine and replace it with a classic looking wooden windmill instead. That thingis absolutely hideous!
Furthermore, I would backdate the period of the layout to 1920-1950, so that I could operate the layout with small steam power and approrpiate-era rolling stock. I would include a passenger local on the layout, either stand-alone, or as part of a mixed-train operation. Ideal prototypes for this layout would include the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Reading, The Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, the Rutland or even the famed Turtle Creek Central!

  6. Not only did you get a lot of layout into such a small space; you really made it look believable. I am glad you have already added the new section. That spur was just begging to be extended. I can hardly wait to get a closer look at it. I appreciate your creativity as well as the invitation to go ahead and, "have fun," even if you are acreage challenged.
