Trains LIVE — 10-12-2022 — Imagine a place that sees the passing of dozens of trains each day. This place is a safe, welcoming location for railfans to watch the trains. Its elevated location provides great photo opportunities. There place offers amenities such as a shelter with picnic tables, plenty of benches, and restrooms. Such a place exists. Come along. It’s Trains Live — Rochelle Railroad Park.
Rochelle, Ill., located about 75 miles west of Chicago is a train watchers’ paradise. On the west side of town, the double-tracked lines for the BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad cross at a quad-diamond configuration. In 1998, the city constructed Railroad Park, designed specifically to welcome train enthusiasts. They embraced the idea that there are people who watch and photograph trains for a hobby. And, instead of chasing them away, offering them a facility in which to pursue their avocation, would benefit both them and the greater community.
Recently, we loaded up the Trains van with folks from Trains, Classic Trains, Classic Toy Trains and Model Railroader, and head to Rochelle. While there we fired up the grill to fry hamburgers; talked with local rail enthusiasts; and watched a whole bunch of trains. Join us as Trains Live explores the Rochelle Railroad Park.
