INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, unhappy about the results of recent labor negotiations, have apparently opted to make a change in union leadership.
The Associated Press and other sources are reporting that challenger Eddie Hall defeated incumbent Dennis Pierce in voting for the union presidency, although the union said earlier this week it would not release verified election results until Monday, Dec. 19.
Hall, a 28-year Union Pacific engineer in Tucson, Ariz., told the AP he is a local vice chairman and that the result is “unprecedented. It’s never happened before and it’ll probably never happen again.”
The labor website More Perfect Union reports Hall received 53% of the vote against Pierce, who had been BLET president since 2010. In his appeal for votes, Hall wrote, “It is clear to me that the national membership is dissatisfied with our leadership and the decisions made by them when it comes to a National Agreement.”
