Hocking Valley Scenic Railway logoThe Hocking Valley Scenic Railway offers steam- and diesel-powered excursions with vintage open-window coaches between Nelsonville and East Logan, over part of the original Hocking Valley Railway’s Athens branch. The train takes you through Wayne National Forest, in the foothills of the Appalachians, and along the Hocking River.

Choices

The railroad’s basic excursions are a 14-mile trip to Haydenville and a 22-mile trip to East Logan. The trips are narrated, and you can ride in a 1920s coach, a 1930s heavyweight passenger car, or an open-air car. Along the way, besides enjoying the scenery, you’ll see a canal lock, take in historical landmarks, and stop at Robbins Crossing, an 1850s-era log village. The railroad has returned 1920 Baldwin 0-6-0 No. 3 to service for steam power.

When to go

Regular excursions begin Memorial Day weekend and end in October. To view the stunning fall foliage, Friday trains are added in October. Various holiday and theme trips are offered throughout the year and include Easter, Halloween, Christmas, and train robbery excursions.

Good to know

Once a year, the HVR runs a special caboose train that railfans and photographers will especially enjoy.

Worth doing

There is something to do for everyone in Wayne National Forest. It has more than 300 miles of trails for hiking and riding bikes, horses, and ATVs. In Nelsonville, you can explore the Public Square, which contains Stuart’s Opera House, the Dew House, and other historic buildings.

Don’t miss

On your visit to Robbins Crossing, you’ll see a group of original log cabins arranged into a historical village. They include a schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, general store, and several homes. Costumed guides offer commentary and demonstrate crafts.

Getting there

Nelsonville is about 56 miles from Columbus and about 200 miles from Cleveland. From Columbus, take Route 33 to Nelsonville. In downtown Nelsonville, take Hocking Parkway south to the depot.
