McPHERSON, Kan. — Thirteen cars of a Union Pacific train derailed Sunday morning, starting a small grass fire and leading to a leak of denatured alcohol from two of the cars, KSN-TV reports.
The derailment was reported about 9:40 a.m. McPherson Fire Chief TJ Wyssman told the station crews from Union Pacific, hazmat teams, and other crews responded to address the leak. McPherson County Communications said there was no threat to the community.
Denatured alcohol, used as an industrial cleaner, is flammable and classified by hazardous by OSHA.
McPherson, in central Kansas, is about 50 miles north of Wichita, and about 80 miles north of the site of a Union Pacific grain-train derailment March 4 near Wellington, Kan. [see “Union Pacific grain cars derail …,” Trains News Wire, March 5, 2023].
