Alstom signs contract to operate, maintain Newark AirTrain

NEWARK, N.J. — Alstom has signed a seven-year contract to operate and maintain the AirTrain system at Newark Liberty International Airport, the company announced Thursday.

The deal with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the airport, valued at about $265 million (announced as €240 million by Alstom), runs through January 2030 and includes an option for an additional year.

Alstom will be responsible for 24-hour operation of 15 six-car Innovia monorail trainsets, serving six stations, as well as maintenance of the equipment and related systems, including station doors, guidways, power systems, and signaling.

“We are proud of our continued partnerships with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and with Newark Liberty International Airport,”  Michael Keroullé, president of Alstom Americas, said in a press release. “… Building upon the knowledge gathered over more than 25 years and our worldwide leadership of operation and maintenance of automated transit systems, our service delivery team will continue to focus on maintaining the AirTrain Newark’s high-performance levels and supporting the best possible passenger mobility experience at the airport.”

  1. Disney World’s monorail is much bigger and more like a train in comparison.
    There goes another decade of no PATH extension. Sigh

Having grown up in and around northern NJ for my first 32 years (I”m 77 Y.O. now in sw, NM), I recall the “Hudson Tubes” nka “PATH”, that my dad took me on to visit mid-town Manhatten, as well as working later years for E-L Rwy, (first in 1968 in the police dept for the 20 months and then transferred to RR telecom) where there was an underground PATH station at the Hoboken commuter train terminal with much commuter train passenger transfers. I can not wrap my head around the idea of that Newark Monorail, when all that funding could have been used to upgrade PATH. It’s no wonder NJ has the highest property taxes in the U.S.

  2. $265 million for the status quo? Sheesh! What a ripoff. The existing system is too small, too slow and horribly unreliable. I use EWR often and the AirTrain fails due to snow, rain, sun etc. It seems $265 million ought to buy some actual improvements.
