Logo of Twin Cities Metro TransitMINNEAPOLIS — Seven people were injured — two in a vehicle, and five on the trains — in a collision between a car and two Metro Transit light-rail trains Monday night, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.

The collision occurred shortly after 9 p.m. at the corner of South 5th Street and Portland Avenue South. Preliminary information indicates the vehicle entered the intersection and was struck by a southbound train, then pushed into a northbound train. It was lodged between the two trains when emergency personnel arrived.

The people in the vehicle were extricated and transported to a hospital, one with critical injuries and one with minor injuries. The five people aboard the trains reported minor injuries.

  1. Correct, Charles , the old potatoe – potato

technical and common street lingo vary in different parts of the country
we can also debate soda vs pop

  2. So, the LRVs entered the intersection on the Red, too, or was the auto trying to turn left? A little more detail would help us to understand what happened.

  3. Are the traffic lights just standard intersection lights or are they coordinated for light rail movement. If so the traffic light should have been red for auto traffic before a train hitting it. Just a thought.

    1. DARYL — FYI the technical term you are looking for is “traffic signal preempt”.

  4. WCCO TV has a video of the accident. The automobile entered the intersection on a yellow light, soon to be red light and was hit by one light rail train and then a second. The automobile is totaled and photos are on the KSTP TV site.
