CSX logoBLUE ISLAND, Ill. — Thirteen cars of a CSX Transportation train derailed Wednesday night in the Chicago suburb of Blue Island, with the railcars damaging several parked vehicles when they overturned on a sharp curve, WLS-TV reports.

No injuries were reported. No hazardous materials were involved, and no cargo was spilled or leaked.

CSX said in a statement that the derailment occurred about 9:24 p.m. near the grade crossing at Thornton Road and 136th Street. That places the accident just west of the railroad’s Barr Yard; video on the TV station website appears to show the accident occurred on a wye.

  1. I see center spine empty lumber cars. I vote as Ronald Hill did, STRINGLINED. Seems that the derailments we see these days has empty center spine lumber flats involved…

  2. Funny that this happens while CSX’s Joe Hinrichs is touting how safe his railroad is. Guess its only as safe as your last derailment!

  3. Satellite photos show what appears to be a very sharp curve on the east leg of a wye. I wonder if track maintenance was an issue?
