PORTLAND, Ore. — Amtrak service between Seattle and Portland has been canceled through at least Wednesday after a landslide between Vancouver, Wash, and Kelso, Wash., on Monday.
Amtrak announced the service disruption on Monday evening following the cancellation of the Seattle-Portland portion of several Cascades trains earlier in the day. The passenger operator cites a BNSF Railway policy that places a moratorium on passenger train movements for a set period following a slide.
Cascades service between Portland and Eugene, Ore., and Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, continues to operate. Amtrak said “limited alternative transportation” would be offered between Portland and Seattle.
The slide resulted in the northbound Coast Starlight terminating in Portland on Monday, with alternate transportation for passengers continuing further north, according to the Amtrak Alerts Twitter feed.
I was wondering when I went trackside on Monday 9 May 2023 in Steilacoom, WA on BNSF Seattle Sub no trains at all for the 31/2 hours I was at trackside. This line typically is incredibly busy nearly all the time.
