TACOMA, Wash. — A 65-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for tampering with railroad equipment, causing a derailment of tank cars carrying oil in Tacoma’s Tideflats industrial area.

The Tacoma News Tribune, which reported the arrest, did not report the man’s name or any additional identifying details.

The incident occurred about 7:55 a.m. Tuesday and involved an unknown number of railcars. No oil was spilled as a result of the derailment of the Tacoma Rail train and no injuries were reported. [Editor’s note: In a subsequent report, the News Tribune reported a BNSF train was involved.] The suspect was booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of malicious injury to railroad property, which is a felony. A police spokeswoman said the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would take over the investigation.
