The Kettle Valley Steam Railway operates over the only preserved portion of the famed Kettle Valley Railway, which was completed in 1915. Passengers can enjoy the rural landscapes of Summerland’s Prairie Valley, and take in the mountains and views of Okanagan Lake from the Trout Creek Bridge, a major feature of the original line.
Choices
The KVR offers regular excursions over a 6-mile route. The 90-minute trip winds through Prairie Valley and its scenic vistas. A century-old steam locomotive, No. 3716, or a backup diesel engine supplies the power. You can ride in two 1940s vintage passenger coaches or three open-air cars. Special events are scheduled throughout the year and include Easter, Mother’s Day, and Christmas trains. About a dozen train robbery and barbecue events take place.
When to go
The KVR operates on a varied schedule. In May and June, and during September and October, regular excursions run Saturday through Monday. In July and August, they run Thursday through Monday.
Good to know
Summerland is situated in the Okanagan Valley amid lush orchards and vineyards, and the valley is home to more than 50 wineries.
Worth doing
Take a side trip into nearby Penticton and tour the former CP ship SS Sicamous. This steel-hulled sternwheeler was built in 1914 as a multipurpose vessel that provided first-class passenger service as well as delivering cargo and daily mail.
Don’t miss
The Trout Creek bridge, at the current turnaround point south of Summerland, sits 238 feet above the canyon floor and provides spectacular views.
Getting there
The Prairie Valley station is located off Highway 97 from either Rosedale Avenue or Prairie Valley Road. It is about a 10-minute drive from the highway.
