Agawa Canyon Tour Train logoBased out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the Agawa Canyon Tour train draws visitors from around the world for a 114-mile ride into the hardwood forests of Northern Ontario. The one-day tour train departs from the former Algoma Central Railway station in downtown Sault Ste. Marie.

Choices

The tour train takes you to Agawa Canyon and back on a one-day round trip. In the canyon, you’ll have 90 minutes to explore: take a scenic walk on trails to several waterfalls, climb 300 stairs to the inspiring lookout perched 250 feet above the canyon floor, or enjoy a picnic lunch. Packages with Sault Ste. Marie accommodations are available.

When to go

The most popular time is during the fall season. Some highlights of the trip are the Montreal River trestle at the hydroelectric dam, and finally the Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park, at Milepost 144 and only accessible by train. The canyon was carved out by the Agawa River, much of the area is sparsely populated and not accessible by vehicle.

Good to know

Aboard the train, a GPS-triggered narration, available in five languages, highlights points of interest and shares some of the rich history of the region. Also, locomotive-mounted cameras provide an “engineer’s eye view” on monitors installed throughout the coaches.

Worth doing

There’s much to do in Sault Ste. Marie, such as strolling along the boardwalk, visiting a casino, or touring the locks.

Don’t miss

The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, located a few blocks away, is a wonderful visit. Across the bridge, the Soo Locks are a must-see.

Getting there

Sault Ste. Marie is located at I-75 and Highway 17. The train leaves from the depot downtown, and signs will point the way to the depot.
