PORT CLINTON, Pa. — The Reading & Northern Railroad will donate $10,000 to the Downtown Pittston Partnership, a nonprofit group advancing the revitalization of downtown Pittston, Pa., the railroad has announced.
“I would like to thank the owners [the Muller family] and administration of the Reading & Northern Railroad for not only their significant capital investment in the north section of our city (the Junction),” said Pittston Mayor Mike Lombardo, “but for being true partners with the city and making this extremely generous donation to our Downtown Partnership.”
The railroad had previously announced plans to fund a station to bring passenger service to Pittston. Construction of the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Regional Railroad Station is in progress; it is slated for a grand opening May 27, after which the station will host excursions between Pittston and Jim Thorpe, Pa., every weekend. Pittston is located between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre.
“The Reading & Northern is delighted to donate money to a cause that will contine to build up the downtown,” said Matt Fisher, general manager of the Reading & Northern passenger department. “… “The new rail service will greatly impact not only Pittston, but the entire Wyoming Valley by bringing many visitors to the area.”
