SCRANTON, Pa. – Steamtown National Historic Site’s Railfest and Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum’s Arts on Fire is set for June 17. In addition to free admission, there will be no cost for Steamtown’s short train rides. A complimentary shuttle service will be available throughout the day to transport visitors between Steamtown and the Scranton Iron Furnaces.
Steamtown’s Railfest event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Programming will be offered throughout the day, including short train rides, the Scranton Limited yard shuttle and the Caboose Hop experience, cab tours of Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4012 and Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 No. 2317, tours of Mattes Street Tower, and demonstrations in the locomotive shop, and “Ring of Fire” demonstrations. Several community partners will be in attendance as well.
More information can be found at the Steamtown website.
And 4012 looks the best it has in years. I was told years ago that they have to move 4012 once in a while to prevent the ground under it from collapsing (I’m assuming that there are former anthracite mines underneath). I’m a big fan of these giants and am happy that 4014 is operational after 40 years of no operational Big Boys.
I hope that NPS finally gets the climate control systems in their building rebuilt ASAP so Steamtown can fully reopen. I’m a Scranton native and would like to see Steamtown be back up to full steam!
No matter which of the 25 Big Boys you see, they are sure good looking locomotives!
