It’s springtime in 1948 and two freshly painted cabooses are being moved out of the Reading Shops at Erie Avenue. An Alco S4 slowly pushes, while the boss inspects the work as they pass. These Bachmann, eight-wheel cabooses were repainted, then decaled with actual Reading caboose numbers and markings. The “cabeese” run on Bob Whipple’s West Berlin Garden Railroad in West Berlin, New Jersey. Bob Whipple photo

The K&S locomotive yard is a quiet place at this late hour, as a single engineer prepares to move his charge to the ready line. By sunup tomorrow he’ll be in Laramie. The track and rolling stock are from LGB. This 1:22.5-scale scene is a part of the railroad belonging to Gene and Sharon Heflin in Springfield, Illinois. John Evans photo

The WV paint scheme was applied to their first diesel many years ago and has stood the test of time. David Winter photo

On the upper loop of Bill Cheplick’s railroad, the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton engine in 1776 Bicentennial colors is heading toward McClouth Steel plant in Trenton, Michigan. The U-25B diesel is going back to the Flat Rock, Michigan, train yard while the RS3 heads to Ford’s stamping plant in Woodhaven, Michigan. The Bicentennial locomotive is a USA Trains SD40-2, the U-25B diesel is Aristo-Craft, and the DT&I RS3 with the starburst logo and Grand Trunk colors is also from Aristo-Craft. All engines and rolling stock were custom airbrushed and weathered by Bill. Bill Cheplick photo

Tram locomotive No. 286 waits to leave Cockshutt Mortimer with a goods train bound for the canal interchange at Gooey, on Mel Turbutt’s Wetton Gooey Light Railway, which is set on the border between England and Wales. The railway linking Gooey station and the canal runs right through the middle of the town, hence the use of tram engines. Mel Turbutt photo
