CHICAGO — Anacostia Rail Holdings has named David W. Ferryman to the newly created position of chief operating officer, effective today (June 15).

Ferryman will be based in Chicago and report to CEO Peter Gilbertson.

“We are very excited to have Dave join our team,” Gilbertson said in a press release. “He has held a rare combination of senior posts in operations, technology, finance and business development in and out of the railroad industry — making and keeping connections along the way.”

Ferryman, a fourth-generation railroader, most recently spent five years as vice president and senior vice president at EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel in Pueblo, Colo. He was responsible for Pueblo operations and organizational responsibilities including safety, marketing, and employee engagement. Both a railroad customer and supplier, EVRAZ Rocky Mountain, a $1 billion operation, is the largest of three domestic producers of rail.

Previously, Ferryman was vice president, engineering, at Canadian National from 2005 to 2017, after being chief engineer, Southern Region, Chicago, from 2003 to 2005. He began his railroad career at Burlington Northern and also worked for Illinois Central until it was purchased by CN.

Ferryman said he was eager to get back into railroading and that Anacostia — with railroads in seven states, including the Pacific Harbor Line, Chicago South Shore & South Bend, and New York & Atlantic Railway — offers multiple opportunities to do what he likes most.

“Anacostia’s railroads literally are located coast to coast,” he says, “from New York to California, Illinois and Indiana, Minnesota to Texas with attendant business opportunities and challenges. It’s a great team with terrific people. I’m really looking forward to being on board to help make Anacostia even more of a success.”
