CPKC logoREESEVILLE, Wis. — CPKC tracks have reopened through the site of Tuesday’s derailment in Reeseville, with Amtrak’s Empire Builder returning to its normal route as of Wednesday evening.

Plans had been for the westbound Builder to hold in Milwaukee until the derailment site on CPKC’s Watertown Subdivision reopened. But the train, which arrived in Milwaukee 2 hours, 13 minutes late, departed after a normal station stop. It was through Columbus, Wis., the first stop after the derailment site, at 8:49 p.m., 2 hours, 54 minutes late.

The eastbound Builder again used the detour via BNSF Railway that both Amtrak trains had followed on July 4. It arrived in Chicago at 9:07 p.m.

CPKC crews remain on site continuing cleanup following the 29-car derailment that occurred about 1:55 p.m. on July 4 [see “CPKC train derails …,” Trains News Wire, July 4, 2023]. The cause remains under investigation].

  1. Flooding and unstable ground conditions in the Reeseville Marsh have been a headache for the railroad since it was built.

    1. CPkc’s website is mum. But the word from witnesses is that the train was traveling at “high speed” and suddenly came to a stop. If the train was of normal length for today’s OR minded CPkc, buff forced caused by slack action could be the cause, just like the Ohio derailment on NS a few months ago. This would especially be true since the derailment of the 29 cars was near the end of the train with a DPU on the end, which would have continued to shove the train for up to 10 seconds after the balance of the train went into emergency, compounding the derailment.

    1. No official information was provided at the moment. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

  2. CPKC crews have done an effective cleanup job! Of course, the derailment in question should never have happened!
