MONTREAL — A station on an under-construction portion of the Réseau express métropolitain light rail system was damaged in an apparent arson fire early Tuesday, police report.
CTV News reports a fire on the tracks at the Canora station was reported about 12:50 a.m. Officers arriving on the scene found incendiary objects nearby, according to a police spokeswoman, who said the fire caused “significant” damage to the REM infrastructure.
CDPQ Infra, which is building and operating the REM system, told CTV that the fire caused damage to about 5 meters of gutter equipment and that crews will perform repairs. The company declined further comment because of the ongoing police investigation.
The station, just outside the west portal of the Mount Royal Tunnel, is one of those being converted from an Exo commuter train stop to use by the REM light rail system. It was closed in May 2020 and is not slated to reopen for light rail service until late 2024.
