ATLANTA — As of Sept. 16, Norfolk Southern has confirmed two recent promotions in its current ranks.
According to NS’ media relations department, Floyd Hudson has been appointed to a newly created position. His title: Vice president of field engagement.
In this leadership role, Hudson will primarily be engaging with front-line railroaders for ideas on how to improve Norfolk Southern. He will also be looking for ways to enhance working conditions, and strengthen the safety and service culture for all employees.
“Floyd’s leadership qualities, deep understanding of the railroad, and extensive relationships in crew rooms across Norfolk Southern make him the perfect leader for this new position,” says an NS spokesman.
Hudson began his career with NS in 2004 as a management trainee. His progression in leadership positions throughout the company led to his role of vice president of transportation in 2022 before the most recent promotion [see “Norfolk Southern names Hudson vice president of transportation,” News Wire, April 5, 2022].
Succeeding Hudson, NS has promoted Joe Gioe to vice president of transportation. Along with accepting his new role, Gioe will also continue his leadership position for the performance excellence team as part of his former title, vice president of performance excellence.
“Over the last year, we have successfully implemented our TOP|SPG operating plan, which balances service, productivity, and growth,” says an NS spokesman. “Moving forward, our emphasis will be on building rigor into our processes and establishing a culture of continuous improvement and refinement.
“Joe is the right leader to continue moving our operations to the next level,” the NS spokesman said.
According to a June 16, 2023, news release, Gioe joined Norfolk Southern as assistant vice president of network optimization in September 2021. He was previously employed at BNSF Railway with multiple leadership roles in transportation and service design.
