Canadian National, Canadian Pacific Kansas City, and Union Pacific have been named to the World and North America Dow Jones Sustainability indices released earlier this month, while CSX is on the North America list.

For CN, it was the 12th consecutive year on the world list and 15th on the North America list. CPKC’s inclusion in its first year after the merger of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern follows CP’s first inclusion the world list and third straight on the North American list in 2022. Union Pacific is on the world list for the first time and the North America list for the second year, while CSX is on the North America list for the 13th consecutive year.

Companies on the world list represent the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index based on long-term economic, environmental, and social criteria.

“We are thrilled to once again be recognized for our commitment to being a leader in sustainability,” Chislain Houle, CN executive vice-president and chief financial officer, said in a press release. “At CN, sustainability is core to how we do business and an essential part of our culture. Our inclusion on the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Indices is a testament to our team of railroaders who make it their mission to deliver responsibly every day, in all areas of our business for all our stakeholders.”

CN’s latest sustainability report is available here.

CPKC CEO Keith Creel said in a press release that his company was “incredibly proud that CPKC’s efforts in sustainability and climate action have been recognized with our inclusion in the DJSI World and North America Indices. This has been a transformational year for our new, combined company and we remain committed to being an industry leader with our sustainability commitments as we grow our business for the future.”

CPKC tracks its sustainability efforts at this section of its website.

“Recognition in the DJSI is a testament to Union Pacific’s transparent progress to reduce our environmental impact, enhance the value we bring employees through meaningful work and meet the highest ethical standards,” UP President Beth Whited said in a press release. “We are honored to be among this elite international group and recognize that our work is not done. We look forward to creating a sustainable future for our employees, customers and communities.”

Union Pacific has dedicated this portion of its website to sustainability information.

Entities on the North America list represents 20% of the largest 600 North American companies in the BMI.

“Participating in the [Corporate Sustainability Assessment] and being a member of the DJSI North America for 13 years in a row is a badge of honor for CSX and a validation of our sustainability commitment,” CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs said in a press release. “Rail and rail-based transportation solutions have inherent environmental advantages over trucking that help our customers reach their carbon reduction goals, yet CSX continues to pursue alternative fuel and fuel-efficiency technologies that further improve our environmental performance.”

CSX addresses sustainability in its most recent Environmental, Social, and Governance Report.

  1. Picture shows a southbound snaking up Byron hill on what used to be a helper district. Double tracking under the Wis. Central eased a bottle-neck, ‘tho even with DPU one occasionally sees units running light back to Fondy (Fond du Lac).
