VALLEY FALLS, N.Y. — Ten cars of a train on the Berkshire & Eastern Railroad derailed about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday night near Valley Falls, Spectrum News 1 reports, sending two into the Hoosic River and closing State Route 67 between Valley Falls and Johnsonville, N.Y.
No injuries were reported. Genesee & Wyoming told the news channel that no hazardous materials were involved; the derailed cars were carrying plastic resin, corn, and vegetable oil; the Albany Times Union — which says the train involved was Norfolk Southern’s, being operated by Berkshire & Eastern — reports the cars in the river were carrying resin and vegetable oil, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Valley Falls, in Rensselaer County, is about 9 miles east of Mechanicville, N.Y., and 20 miles northeast of Albany, N.Y., and is on the Pan Am Southern, the NS-CSX joint venture operated by Genesee & Wyoming’s Berkshire & Eastern since last September as a condition of CSX Transportation’s purchase of Pan Am Railways.
