BLAIRSDEN, Calif. — Fourteen cars of a Union Pacific train derailed this afternoon (Sunday, Feb. 11) in the Feather River Canyon, sending cars and coal into the Middle Fork of the Feather River, KOVR-TV reports.
The California Office of Emergency Service’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response said it was assessing the environmental impact.
Union Pacific told the station that no injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were released. Cleanup efforts are in progress and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
The derailment site is near Highway 70 and Camp Layman Road, between Sloat and Blairsden on UP’s Canyon Subdivision, placing it about 15 miles west of Portola, Calif.
Is this another land-barge coal train that has derailed seemingly for no reason?
