U.S. rail traffic up for week ending Feb. 10

WASHINGTON — U.S. weekly rail traffic was up for the week ending Feb. 10, according to the latest statistics from the Association of American Railroads. It was the third straight week showing a gain and fourth in six weeks so far this year.

Total traffic was 484,840 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 4.5% compared with the same week in 2023. That included 220,362 carloads, down 2.5% compared to the corresponding week a year ago, and 264,478 containers and trailers, up 11.1%.

Through six weeks of 2024, carload traffic is down 6.4% compared to 2023, while intermodal traffic is up 6.5% for an overall gain of 0.2%.

North American totals for the week, from 12 reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, included 329,758 carloads, down 1.4% from the same week in 2023, and 345,065 intermodal units, up 8.9%. The overall total of 674,823 carloads and intermodal units represented a 3.6% increase for the week. Through six weeks, 2024 North American volume is down 0.8% compared to 2023.
