NEW YORK — Trains will be replaced by buses on the eastern portion of the Long Island Rail Road’s Ronkonkoma Branch on weekdays beginning Monday, March 4, the most significant of a series of schedule changes to allow for track work throughout the LIRR system.
A number of other changes, involving new trains, new start times or points of origination, changes in stops, or elimination of current trains, are outlined here. But the Ronkonkoma work, which will see bus substitution weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., is the only project involving a prolonged suspension of rail service. It will impact two daily round trips serving seven stations between Medford and Greenport, N.Y., and is expected to last through May 19. A Metropolitan Transportation Authority representative told the Riverhead News-Review that those traveling by bus can expect up to 30 minutes additional travel time during the project.
Rail service between Ronkonkoma and Greenport will continue to operate on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
