EXETER, Neb. — One crew member was transported to a hospital with minor injuries after a BNSF intermodal train struck a semi-truck and derailed today (Friday, March 1) near Exeter, Neb., KOLN-TV reports. Fifteen to 20 railcars derailed, according to the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office.
The collision occurred about 10 a.m. , just west of Exeter at the Road 20 grade crossing north of U.S. Route 6. The driver of the truck, which was carrying an empty fertilizer hopper, was examined at the scene and did not require hospitalization, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Exeter is 51 miles east of Hastings, Neb., on BNSF’s Hastings Subdivision, and about 40 miles southwest of Lincoln, Neb.
Positive Train Control would have been useless to prevent this accident.
‘For every system there is a fool who will accidentally find a way to beat it.’
Thankfully no mention of any hazardous material. Wonder what type of crossing protection is there. On intermodal derailments it would be nice to know if it is 15-20 tubs involved or 15-20 intermodal cars which can be five packs making a heck of a difference.
Truck driver should be the most experienced drivers in the country yet they continue to get by trains at crossings. You just have to wonder.
That makes FOUR derailments on BNSF since the beginning of 2024, as reported in trains.com. My earlier statement about BNSF maintenance stands verified.
What does hitting a truck at a crossing have to do with RR maintenance?
This accident had nothing to do with maintenance.
Must be from the Ancora Holdings School of non-sequitur. It clearly says the truck was the cause, has nothing to do with maintenance. I believe another derailment (Amtrak on BNSF) was caused by a truck on the crossing as well. Too many people use things like this to push an agenda, whatever that may be.
IDIOT TRUCKER!
Ray Cooney, you’re right about that!!
“Watch me beat that train …!” (?)
More like…”what train?” “Oh, THAT one.”
