FRISCO, Texas – Former Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy No. 4018 finally reached the Museum of the American Railroad’s new site in Frisco on Sunday. The locomotive had been moved from Dallas to Irving on Aug. 18. Due to the late hour of arrival in Irving, officials decided to tie the train down for the night instead of running the remaining 25 miles to Frisco.
The special hospital train departed Irving on BNSF behind BNSF GP39Es Nos. 2764 and 2753 pulling several tank cars for braking with No. 4018 in the middle of the consist.
The Museum of the American Railroad has been moving its collection from Dallas to its new home in Frisco throughout the summer. The move included a Frisco 4-8-4 and 2-10-0, and a Union Pacific DD40X “Centennial,” the world’s largest diesel locomotive, but moving No. 4018 proved to be a more challenging proposition. The move was originally scheduled for June, then July, and finally August. The museum coordinated the move with BNSF Railway; Dallas, Garland & Northeastern Railroad; Union Pacific; and Trinity Railway Express.
