Open House set for Saturday to mark completion of restoration of N&W business car

An event to celebrate the restoration of Norfolk & Western business car No. 300 is set for this Saturday in East Chicago, Ind. N&W Business Car 300 Preservation Society

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. — The Norfolk & Western Business Car 300 Preservation Society will host an open house and unveiling ceremony to celebrate completion of the restoration of the railcar this Saturday, May 18, at Professional Locomotive Services in East Chicago.

Admission is free. In additional to tours of the newly restored car, the event will include displays of Professional Locomotive Services equipment (EMD Model 40 No. 300, SW9 No. 2308, and GP10 No. 7570, as well as a rare opportunity to visit the facilities of PLS, a repair and maintenance firm.

The event is set for 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Professional Locomotive Services is located at 4949 Huish Drive, East Chicago, Ind., 46312. Additional event information is available on Facebook.

The Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is dedicated to the preservation of the railcar built by Pullman in 1917. It was modernized at N&W’s Roanoke Shops in 1955, sold by the railroad in 1987, and stored in a warehouse in 1991. It was donated to the group by its owner in 2020, restored to operating condition the following year, and began operating in excursion service in 2022.
